Community Hall and Media Centre Staufen
Situated in close proximity to the historic city centre and the southern town entrance, the design of the new community hall and media centre for Staufen emphasises its specific urban location and public purpose. The typology of a horizontal podium with two vertical volumes breaks down the overall massing into smaller scale figures integrating the new building into the grain of the surrounding but highlighting the new addresses of the two institutions.
The composition of the buildings generates a new forecourt appropriate for its purpose to invite visitors directly and intuitively into the public foyers of the community hall and the media centre. The choses urban strategy thereby allows for the autonomy of both institutions as well as beneficial synergies among each other.
The development of the building heights expresses the internal double height space of the concert-/theatre hall on the external volume to underline its purpose and meaning within the city. Moreover, the elongated bar building for the media centre - conceived as a stack of three regular floors with identical heights - is deliberately developed vertically to form a gate situation at the southern town entrance.
The calm language of the new building ensemble is defined by a reduced material palette of concrete for the topographical plinth and timber as the singular material inside out for the raising building figures. The new building draws its identity from the delicate warm timber structures that make strong references to the craftsmanship and the predominant materiality of the black forest region.
